Who's the richest of them all?

With all of the taxes people want to levy against "rich people", I was wondering who exactly is "rich"? We usually think of Bill Gates or Donald Trump, but who else is rich?

(What follows is my completely unscientific Google search of "richest [fill in the profession]):

Sports - Tiger Woods

Business - Bill Gates

Producer - George Lucas

Actress - Julia Roberts

Actor - Harrison Ford

Writer - JK Rowling

American - Bill Gates

Model - Gisele Bundchen

Not knowing how any of the American citizens on this list voted, I'm wondering what they are thinking about the calls to "stick it to the rich", "spread the wealth", etc. I may not agree with how much money Tiger Woods and Harrison Ford make for what they do, but I sure don't agree that they should get hosed because they make a lot of money. If I were a sports or movie star of their caliber, I would be making that much money too, but you don't see me crying "that's not fair" because they have more than I do.

Life's tough. Mind your own, quit complaining about "fair", pull out some of that American work ethic and make your life better.

Keeping Victoria's secrets, well, secret

From StLToday: Modesty reawakens with clothes that decline to let it all hang out.

What a concept - I say huzzah! Wear clothes in your size, not your little sister's or your big brother's.

What about the other 7 guys behind him? One fan's view

There's the pitcher, catcher and batter. And 7 other guys getting paid to stand on the grass. When did pitchers become the one-man strikeout machine? "Strike him out", "throw a strike"...it all has to do with that one man.

And it's crap.

Give me a pitcher who remembers the 7 heartbeats behind him - that guy know that he doesn't have to do all the work. Of course, those guys have to do their jobs for the plan to work, but it seems to be a better way to do things than pinning everything on one arm.

Having a license makes it safe & healthy?

"To sell "potentially hazardous foods," such as meat or dairy products, vendors at farmers markets must provide mechanical refrigeration and register with the county board of health for either a $214 annual license or a $30 temporary permit, good for one week only."

...

"We want to make sure that farmers markets are safe and healthy places to get food," said Dave Covell, the county's deputy director of environmental health. "If somebody operates without a license, we'll shut them down on site."

From: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/07/farmers_market_vendors_getting.html

I will grant that refrigeration is a good thing, but having been to open air markets in Mexico and having eaten food at those markets that had not been refrigerated, I fail to see the connection between refrigeration, licenses, and safety.

Computer with Vista = new camera!

I have once again been forced to upgrade my technology - my trusty Canon Powershot A80 (which has been well-loved and still works like a champ) is not supported by Windows Vista.

My new toy is an HP Photosmart M447. I hope Vista likes it...

Eliminate summer school...go year round

In today's Wall Street Journal (06/25/2009), the Personal Journal section has an article lamenting the loss of summer school programs due to budget cuts and how students will fall behind on their learning over the 3 month break.

Well, that is true - students do not retain everything they learned over the previous nine months over summer break. So why don't we have year-round school?

Fine, there is no long summer break, but there are more, shorter breaks during the year. I have a hard time not going stir-crazy over a 2 week Christmas break, let alone dealing with 3 months with "nothing to do". (Side note: contrary to popular belief, any teacher worth her/his salt does not sit around like a lump during the summer, so no, it's not nice to have summers off, because I don't).

Of course there are potential problems to going to school year-round, A/C being one of them. Having worked in schools with no A/C, I can tell you that August, September, and late May are miserable. The PTO and booster groups seem to have no problems raising money for their causes - window A/Cs could be added to their lists.

Possible benefits? Better retention of materials, shorter school days, ability to have more electives and variety in classes (maybe have more 1 semester classes available), ability to delve more deeply into the content studied.... I'm sure there are more benefits to be had. A shorter school day could allow for earlier practices for sports, allowing students to get home from games at a more decent time in the evening. That also would give students who need to work a few more hours per week at the job.

It's something worth thinking about.
